Every state government, local government, and many other entities have the power of eminent domain.

the property owner has the constitutional right to due process and compensation, and can challenge and litigate the exercise of eminent domain.

In general, environmental regulation is not a taking for the purposes of eminent domain.

This is true. Isn't it usually for development such as building highways, mineral extraction, and other commercial interests (usually running counter to environmental interests)?

No, it's generally for public purposes, like building roads, building bridges, building government buildings.

I haven't heard of anything like that in Vermont. Has the government taken people's property through eminent domain here in recent decades?

I recently heard a This American Life episode about the Marcellus Shale natural gas deposit under parts of Pennsylvania. I believe eminent domain played a part in getting the drilling company land it wanted.

I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe for the Circ, or for some bridge replacement? I think a lot of the time these things get worked out so it never gets any public notice as a government taking.

Default Windsor area

I live in what's known as the Upper Valley, which is in the eastern part of Vermont. The Connecticut River is the border between NH and VT, and I have never had a problem finding a job in the 20 years I have been here (first in the medical field and then in software.) DHMC is always hiring, and there is are two smaller regional hospitals here as well. Hanover, NH is the home of Dartmouth College, so there are lots of cultural activities as well as outdoor things to do. We have always enjoyed a very low unemployment rate in the Upper Valley. I live in Windsor, which is a small town with a very easy commute to major employers in the area. You can also check out Hartland, Hartford, White River Jct., Norwich and Wilder for housing options if you want to stay on the Vermont side of the river. That being said, I love Burlington as well. My son graduated college in May (Vermont Tech) and had three job offers immediately for the same pay he was offered in Boston. All in all, I think Vermont is a great place to live and raise a family, and you will probably be happy in whatever town you settle on. Good luck!

I would be extremely sad if it came to this, because Vermont is such a perfect place to raise kids, but after 7 years of searching for a decent job, we may have to look elsewhere. I recommend securing a job before you move!
Hi. I couldn't not comment on this (not sure when this was posted, may be a while now, but...) because it sounds exactly like me! We are in Boulder though, not Denver. Boulder is amazing, but impossible unless you are in the "club". We are looking to move to Vermont. It is hard to imagine ANY place could be worse for jobs, but I guess you can always get worse...people are commenting how bad Vermont is for work...it has been 7 years for me searching for a decent job as well in Colorado! It's time for us to leave. Good Luck

It all depends on your line of work. Vermont's #1 industry is tourism. Because of that, most jobs are in the service industry. We have a low unemployment rate, but the other end of that is incomes. I think most people complain about wages more than not getting a job. The VHFA data released shows that about 50% of the population make $12/hr or less. That is the bad news. The good news is you never know unless you try. Look for a job in your industry and see if the pay will be enough. I'm sure you know this, but don't move until you have a job.
