Just curious if ethnic groups that reside in Rutland, Vermont could give their true, honest opinion regarding an African American family moving to Rutland? We have a 2 and 5 year old and I really don't want to expose them to hatred at such a young age..

Does it have to be Rutland? If you have a job there I think it would work. Depending on what you can afford to pay for a house I can give you an idea of communities around Rutland if you did not want to live in the city. Both of my parents are from Rutland its a community we are familiar with.

I would be less worried about hate and more about where you like to live. I had African American friends growing up in that area and we never had a problem at all.

A lot of non-White drug dealers/gang members have been in Rutland in recent years, coming from out of state. Recently there was a home invasion by some Latinos. It's not right, but it has created some racist attitudes. Whether you'd experience them or not I can't say. In a better part of town, maybe not.

I'd avoid living in Rutland for more than those reasons though. Castleton would be an easy commute and as a college town, has more non-Whites around and might be a better environment all around. Other nearby towns are nicer than Rutland too.

It can be difficult for any outsider to be accepted in Vermont, especially outside the cities. The color of your skin doesn't matter. I haven't witnessed any racism, but if I was an African-American, I wouldn't want to live here.

I have had several of my Black grad students obtain their doctorate and get jobs as Assistant Professors at Middlebury College. They all left in short order. They told me they didn't encounter overt racism, but basically everyone in the state is White and they felt isolated. That was their experience, it might not be others.
