Rail-Trail Causeway in Colchester
I'm not sure if anyone on the forum has ever used the bike path in Colchester or Burlington, but both can be taken to the Causeway in Colchester. The Causeway is an old rail line that went from Vermont to Canada. It went out of service in the late 50's or early 60's and it has since been converted to a trail. The unique thing about the causeway is that it is a trail that goes out into Lake Champlain up to South Hero. If anyone is in the area for leaf peeping don't miss out on this trail. As you bike or walk out you have the lake and the Adirondack Mountains to your left and the Green Mountains and Camels Hump with the lake to your right. During the month of August they have a ferry that takes you across the 'cut'. Because the trail goes out into the lake they have a break in the trail about 3 miles out so that boats can pass. The cut is only a few hundred feet wide. I wish they had more ferry service, but that may change in the future. There are fantastic sunsets in the evening and the fall colors in a few weeks will be the same. If you have never been to the causeway don't pass it up. I think it has some of the best views Vermont has to offer. The only other place I would say that has equal or better views would be at Fletcher Allen Health Care on the seventh floor, looking out onto the lake and the Adirondack Mountains during sunset. The only problem is only myself my coworkers and a few patients get to see those views.

I don't have any pictures to show yet, but this site has a few. I hope to head out again within a week. I'll try to remember to bring my camera.

Not too many years ago the powers that be proposed a 27 mile commuter railroad along Rt 7 corridor south of Btown. Even if people used it and that's a big if IMHO, it never went very far as the cost was way too much to benefit a small population.
I assume eventually Rt 7 south of btown will be a divided highway much like they did for Rt 7 in sections between Benn/Rut and Rt 4 between the NY border and Rutland.

Pictures of and from the causeway
I agree it's a must when visiting. It's absolutely gorgeous anytime of day, but especially at sunset. Watched a few when we were up there in August. We also took the bike ferry across to South Hero, which was fantastic.
Here's a pic I took from the causeway at sunset, I tried to upload more...but computer didn't want to cooperate. I have tons more that I could email if anyone wants..

Great photo!
I love The Colchester Causeway and the whole Burlington Bike Path etc. I used to try to describe it to people, but I found taking people there works better. It's the sort of thing that has to be experienced! So far, it's my second favorite bike path in the world
