Newport is fairly isolated compared to other Vermont locations...BUT...you've got Canada just a few miles north. There is a small mall in Sherbrooke (1/2 hour), or you can be in Montreal in about 1.5 hours.
Not a lot of industry up there....lot of service level jobs.
For retiring...if you like quiet, you'll like the NEK.

My wife recently spoke to a woman from Richford (west of Newport), who said that crime is really bad in Richford right now. Lots of drugs and prostitution. I have not confirmed that elsewhere, nor do I know if it is a problem in other towns.

The Northeast Kingdom does have a pretty good Chamber of Commerce website. A quick Google search should find it for you.

Alright flatlander, The whole state may be cold be we are the coldest. Visit it many times each season in a house, not a resort. I like it how it is isolated

I'm attending UVM right now, and hear all of the out of state students complain about the temperature. I feel like its actually really warm out (dang lake effect). Also, the Valentine's Day blizzard was a big deal with 24 inches in Burlington, there was about double that much at my house in the NEK.

Also, for anyone who is curious: Memphremagog IS magnificent.
