In this new year I'm thinking of all the places in Vermont that used to exist and gave the place character, or were simply notable or enjoyable. What things do you miss? What landmarks do you remember?

I remember going to the Winnisquam Farms Creamery in Waterbury to use the high pressure steam to clean the car engine. I remember the OLD Waterbury dump, then the replacement one that most people think of as the old Waterbury dump. I remember when "Music to go to the dump by" on WDEV was really something people did when going to the dump.

I remember the old lodge on the top of Mt. Mansfield and the year they tore it down. I remember Church Street as a real shopping street, with Woolworth's and Sears, JC Penny, Abraham's Camera Shop, etc.

I remember the Ticonderoga in the water. I remember the numbers of train track sidings all up and down Pine Street. I remember the weird combo of smells from the old gas plant and the Maypo "factory."

I remember the drive past Bolton Falls before the interstate was constructed, and the turnout on the road there where it felt like the dividing line between mountain Vermont and the Champlain Valley.

I remember the Dog Team Tavern as an exceptional restaurant. I remember the Harbor Hideaway and the eclectic collection there. I remember Doughboy's, the bakery/truck stop by K-Mart and the filled cookies and turnovers. I remember the old Burlington Airport and the DC-3s flying low up the Winooski Valley causing tv reception to "beat."

What do you remember?

I have very fond memories of the rickety but charming Vermont Steakhouse in downtown Bennington. About a month ago, I was looking through real estate listings and I think I saw the building, but it was no longer a restaurant.

I also remember the spooky Walloomsac Inn near Old Bennington--I think it is still standing but in decay and disrepair. It began in the 18th century as a coaching inn.

Castleton STATE College. The Checkmate restaurant in Castleton. One of my best friends & I used to order their small chef salads (that were HUGE) and mozzarella sticks for our many 2 hour lunches during my undergraduate years.

The old Rutland Mall-now it is Home Depot & Big Lots.

I remember driving on Church Street in Burlington.

The old Paramount theatre in Brattleboro. I was working at the Holstein at the end of Main Street when it burnt down-you could see the smoke from my work.

The Common Ground restaurant in Brattleboro. I hope that's the name of it. You had to climb a flight of stairs to get to it. Good decent food at down to earth prices. No fancy pretentious atmosphere just nice people and good food. They even had one food item that was so cheap that anyone could afford it--I think it was call Poor Mans or something. I wish I had the menu because everything they had sounded good.

I remember the common ground got a tostada or something there with the pops, not bad for Vermont, lol those steep steps. Had the view out the upstairs windows onto downtown. My favorite place is Rochester Cafe hopefuly that still open, check it out if you drive through 100 in central VT amazing sandwiches nad stuff great scenery going further north. Rt 100 is like the heart of Vermont imo.

Rochester Cafe is still open, still with an old soda fountain. Great food, great people and well worth the stop in this little village on your way through the state on 100. Rochester is a hidden jewel - lots of arts, some tourists, some nice dining spots and second home retreats, but more importantly, a great little establishment of full time residents in a community that is doing well despite everything Irene threw at it.
