Can anyone recommend any places/activities for a trip with young children (1 & 4 years). We would prefer northern VT as we're coming from across the border. We've never been to VT Thank you!

The Montshire Museum in Hanover is good for kids. One year old won't get much out of it, but your 4 y/o will. Then head up to Jay Peak where there is a water park maybe. Not much in central VT for kids though.

Near Burlington:
Shelburne Farms
Vermont Teddy Bear Factory

In Burlington:
ECHO Center

As noted above, Jay Peak just south of the border has an awesome indoor water park.

The Montshire Museum is in Norwich (not Hanover) FYI.

Have to second the Montshire Museum. Took our son there when he was small and he loved it. There are a lot of interactive things to do.
