They think the role of law should be to leave them alone. That is pretty easy.

BTW, the gun laws are great in Vermont.

I think that is a healthy attitude. Sometimes when laws are passed with good intentions they seem to backfire or make things worse. VT town hall meetings seem like a great place for the people to express their opinions on the issues and to be a check and balance in the system. Seems like it is one of the very few places left where the needs of the people are actually heard, instead of supposed or pushed aside by corporate/special interests.

That could have been me writing that a few years ago. Unfortunately law school is not about meeting the people or intellectual challenges.

Well, that's another reason why I like VLS. They seem to be very into experiential education and don't seem to suffer from Ivy Tower syndrome. Though, I'm sure the experiences of 1Ls all over the country are similar. I will try to make most of the experience and opportunities offered.

Why do you say that? Did you attend VLS?

I consider myself to be a liberal Republican (a New England Republican) with a libertarian live-and-let-live bent. I don't like taxes, but I believe in a social safety net, I think the environment should be preserved, but encourage smart economic growth, I don't believe in gun control, but do believe in civil unions.

Funny how people still have this Red State, Blue State idea in their minds. Certain states may lean a certain way, but we're really all purple. haha

Whoa! Are you sure you are talking about Vermont. Some of your above statements seem to indicate otherwise. In my case at least federal taxes take a minimal bite due to a variety of write offs and deductions, however state and local taxes are absolutely very high. The concept of transparency and seeing tax revenues being well spent will get you a considerable amount debate. No doubt the outdoor lifestyle is great, but as one poster put it you can't eat the scenery. As far as political debate goes from my experience when you meet and socialize with the rank and file workers trying to raise a familiy, maintain a roof over their heads, and otherwise meet their obligations you will find a tendancy towards more of a red state atmosphere, but within academia and spheres of Vt society the opposite will more than often ring true. Opinions, dialogue, debate are great, but I have at least found a very staunch my way or the highway attitude to exist. Despite this compared to most other places I have been it is not an aggressive in your face vitriol which is much more common elsewhere. Anyway, good luck with your choices and if your studies bring you here then best of luck and enjoy what you can in. Outdoor opportunities are abundant and I persoanally like all the seasons. I hope next year to finish my fifth thru hike of the Long Trail after a good winter of snowshoeing.

Well I know I will agree with some people on some issues and others on other issues. It's like anywhere. I'm sure there are Vermonters who want to know that their money is being spent wisely to ensure a high standard of living. It is the healthiest state in the nation for one!

To get back to the OP, South Royalton is a nice area and lost in all the editorial comments was the mention of the Royalton Co-Op spitting distance from the campus. The Hanover Co-op, about 45 min away is a large store with a wide variety of healthy veggie fare.

It's rep far exceeds it's size. Ranked #1 in Environmental Law in U.S. News Rankings 2007. Many fine lawyers have attended and the students live in Bethel, Tunbridge and even Chelsea as well as SR and other towns down river in the Upper Valley.

Yup, Harvard, Yale and the rest of the prestigeous law schools produce great lawyers. All you have to do is look at Washington DC and you can see that.
