I don't suggest living in Rutland unless you find a nice neighborhood. I live 20 minutes outside of Rutland but I am always there for shopping. Rutland gets pretty depressing and gloomy. Parts of Rutland are nice and parts are pretty run down and dumpy. It's hit or miss so look carefully if you plan to live in Rutland.

Vermont Sport and Fitness is my suggestion for a fitness center.

PriceChopper has good prices for groceries. Hannaford might be a little nicer and certainly a good store if you live south of town. They are a little more expensive usually but it really depends. I don't recommend Grand Union. It probably hasn't been renovated in 50 years.

What neighborhoods in Rutland are nice? I'd like to live within walking distance of the town center because that is where I'll be working. Although I will have a car, I don't have any experience driving in the winter, being from the South. That is another factor.

I am from Miami and I have never had a problem driving in snowy or icy weather. I've never had 4WD or AWD. In my 20 years in New England, I've had a Jetta, a Tracer wagon, and now a 2006 Honda Civic. I always put snow tires on in winter. Just be careful and you should be fine.

When you come to Rutland, just look around and see where you feel comfortable. Most neighborhoods are fine. I've lived on East Street (parallel to Route 7) and now I live in the NE section of town. There are plenty of good areas to live.

Generally speaking, East of Rt 7 has the better neighborhoods, with the Northeast neighborhood being more preferable. We moved from Castleton to Rutland's NE neighborhood a couple of years ago and I am so happy we did. It's a quiet, sleepy neighborhood, quieter than our house in Castleton even, but we're still very close to anywhere we need to be (unlike Castleton). If you're going to settle in Rutland and you have kids, be sure to settle on the East side of town as they also have the better primary school in town.

I live in Rutland City. It is amazingly quiet at night most of the time. There are lots of family-friendly activities and some really good private schools.
Shopping at the downtown farm market gives you fresh vegetables and fruit, locally grown meats, artisan cheeses, and handicrafrs.
Summertime is superb for music lovers of all stamps: classical at the Killington music festival, all other kinds at a variety of open air free concerts throughout the warm weather season.
Rutland's center of culture is the Paramount theater, www.paramountvt.org -- volunteering as an usher is lots of fun
