Default Visiting Vermont

I'm thinking of a trip in June for 2 or 3 days and need a suggestion of places to go. I don't need a lot of touristy type stuff, but some good trails to hike on, nice scenery, and lodging that's relatively affordable (middle class-ish rates).

I figure somewhere in the Green Mts. but I'm not sure which town/area is best, since I've never been to the state before.

The great thing about Vermont is you can stay in Burlington for the evening life, but be outside the city in the wilderness in no time. Trails are close-you could be anywhere in an hour.

You're basically talking the whole state, but the best views in my opinion are overlooking Lake Champlain.

Where are you coming from? If anywhere near NYC I would fly into Burlington airport from JFK on JetBlue ($55 each way -- cheaper than driving), rent a car, and stay somewhere south of Burlington like Charlotte. Beautiful area.

Do a Google search for "Charlotte Vermont Inn" and you will find a good handful of inns for reasonable rates.

Good suggestions, thanks. Will most likely be flying into Boston.

If you can fly Southwest Airlines then another idea is flying into Manchester, NH which is a nice airport and will cut an hour off your drive into Vermont.

The three main day hikes that seem to fit are up Mt Mansfield (it has a road to the top as well, and is a fairly popular hike), up Camels Hump (no road to the top, but still some well marked and popular trails), and up Mt. Hunger (much less travelled).

Mansfield and the Hump have views of Lake Champlain on many days. Check out the bed-n-breakfasts for lodging that gets away from the generic motel room and makes the experience more unique.

You can find many summer packages on the state website that can give you ideas of location. The Northeast Kingdom is also a great place for hiking.
