Haunted Houses In Vt
I lived in Rutland for several years, and up until that point I never believed in ghosts. The house that I was renting was built in the 30's, and after a while of living there I noticed strange things--I would wake up and items would be in diiferent places than where I had left them, I heard strange banging sounds, and on a couple of occasions furniture from the attic came tumbling down the stairs. My landlord confirmed to me that there had been reports of this sort of thing by previous tenants. I asked around, and apparantly VT has a long history of being haunted. I was even told that there was a house that actually turned itself around at a different angle. Does anyone have stories or experiences? I am very interested

I heard the Turning House story from a young Woodchucker at my job, too.
Our house was an 1890 farmhouse built by the family our town was named after.
I was in Penna. for a few months before I joined my Wife, already living in VT.
She swore the smell of chocolate chip cookies would waft throught the house
everyday about 1/2 hour after she got home from work. Later, I would always
work in the basement work shop and there where two locks that would always
be undone when I checked them. Obviously, I relocked them each time, but they
were always undone when checked again. You dont need to check locks too
often in VT so this was sort of random.
The Wilson Castle on West Proctor road, Rutland City is said to have a few spooks in it.
The caretakers say they need to remake the beds inbetween tours

The house I lived in had been used as a turn key kind of drinking club during prohibition. I don't know, I never felt threatened or anything--I would actually have conversations directed toward any possible entities when I was bored and things were really quiet. A lady who lived across the street said a previous tenant had come running out after midnight and said she was never going back inside again. Maybe something bad happened to her, I don't know.

How strange! Are you sure the noise in the attic and furniture tumbling down couldn't be the result of raccoons or other wildlife? I have had encounters with poltergeists, but the problem with ghosts/manifestations is that they are so sporadic. There might be occurances for a week, or a few days, or even a few hours and then nothing for a long time, if ever again. It's not like in the movies where occupants of a haunted house are being tormented on a daily basis, and can prove it to themselves or others. I'd say that's the most difficult part - proving it to yourself. As I said, if things aren't happening regularly, you start thinking it was your imagination.

Yeah, it wasn't like every day or anything. I would say maybe in the years that I lived there it was probably every few weeks or so that I noticed something. Primarily in the last year that I was there. The attic was one of those big, full area attics that you walked up stairs in the kitchen to get to. I had a lot being stored up there, and a couple of times a chair would come rolling down the stairs or something. The banging was sort of like if you were sitting in the living room, then all of a sudden in the middle of the floor you might here the sound of a foot stomping, or footsteps in the kithen. One night I heard a bang that shook the entire room, and when I turned on the light there was a two and a half foot tall jewelry armoire type of thing that had been on the dresser in the corner of the room, but it was in the middle of the room (about 6 feet from where it was originall) and it was standing straight up, as if placed there. I also had a young child who had electronic noise making toys, and they went off a few times with nobody touching them. I never saw anything--me "talking" to it was really more done out of boredom. Just kind of my way of saying "I don't know if you are here, but if you are, I am really not a bad person".

I believe it--covered bridges have always been a bit creepy to me. VT is so undeveloped, and a lot of the housing is so old. Anything new is usually built on old farm and pioneer land. I am not surprised at all by the stories I hear of ghosts.

There are a few good books published about NE hauntings, and there are a few books for just VT hauntings...I cannot think of the titles off my head however, I betcha you can contact a VT bookstore, via email and ask them for the titles. Have fun!

There were a lot of local people who claimed to either have experienced things in their home, or knew somebody else who had. I wonder if there is a book on that house that was said to have turned itself around in the other direction? I'll have to look that one up. As a Real Estate Agent, have you ever heard about anything with any of your properties?

With a house turning around, odd though it may be, there could be a logical, physical explanation. Maybe there was a problem with its foundation, and it could have been shifting slowly over time. There also could be some geological reason for a disruption or movement, like an underground water table rising or whatever. I know its more fun to believe in haunted houses, and I do believe in such things, but sometimes there is a more worldly explanation right in front of people that they may just choose to ignore.
