Since we already have an income tax here, which in my case ranks second only to the property tax in cost, I assume you are referring to the talk going around to propose that the current education funding from property taxes be shifted at least in part to income. I do agree the potential here could be a major snafu unless this is very carefully thought out. Will be watching this closely.

Funny how news will pop up. Turns out today in Montpelier two outside tax policy experts testified before legislators of the Vermont Ways and Means Committee. A few points of their analysis of Vermont's tax system stressed the need to "simplify {tax system} ... and help make Vermont more competitive." One of the other comments was of particular interest, "the education property tax is the most nightmarishly complex property tax I've ever seen." It will be interesting to see what if anything the legislature will accomplish this coming session.

My family and I are relocating to VT from rural Maryland in JAN of 2008. My wife and I work in healthcare and are both actually going to be making more money in VT. In our preliminary online searches for housing, it appears to be slightly less expensive for a 4bed/2bath home with certainly more land than here in MD. While I cannot comment on the taxes or other VT resident "fees" at this point, we are still really looking forward to moving.

Good luck with your home search. I own a 4 BR, 2 BA on 10.5 acres, but it will be a few more years before I'm ready to sell.

Where will you be working if you don't mind me asking? I'm in healthcare myself and have worked in several hospitals here in Vermont. My wife and I currently work at Fletcher Allen Health Care here in Burlington. I may be able to help out with any questions you have.

Well, the main problem from my point of view are the ludicrously high property taxes in VT. I would very much like to retire to Vermont, but the property taxes have scared me off. I was looking at a $600,000 home in the Woodstock area and the property taxes would be $10,000 a year! Yikes!

Woodstock is a tony town with lots of high end homes (over-priced IMO) so yes, taxes are high there. If you look in a non-resort/touristy town, you can find some better values.

Yikes is right. That's about 3 times what you would be paying for a similarly priced home in NYC.
