I live in Springfield and take the free shuttle bus to Ludlow's Okemo resort. Rumor is that there are 134 homes for sale here. You might want to look at available shuttle services in towns outside the ski towns-- they might be a lot cheaper in terms of housing and just about everything else. Cheaper still would be to take up either Nordic skiing or snowshoeing!

Right now it's a buyers markets here in the MRV. All the realtors I know are not very busy. Many of the realtors have their listings online so it's easy to get some baseline data. I agree with the others that $200,000 isn't going to get ya much.

I am not sure I would call Waitsfield Village a compact walkable place like maybe Stowe, it's pretty spread out. Historic Waitsfield Village/Bridge St is really nice with a covered bridge and has some really cool shops/restaurants but it's very small.

Internet is DSL with the local phone company, not very high speed but it gets the job done.

Tho not a " ski town " Montpelier is a very walkable town. Lots of outdoor sports minded folks.
