I'm a new nurse (just graduated last week, RN-BSN) and I'm looking for my first job. I'm considering VT, but there don't seem to be any nurse residencies in VT, which I really hoped to do. Can you give any advice for good places to start out? I looked at Fletcher-Allen in Burlington, but the rental market seems impossible on a nurse's salary, so I've nixed that. Is Central Vermont Medical Center good for new nurses? The job requirement said experience preferred, so maybe??? I'm also hoping to get a master's degree, but it seems the only one offering nursing higher ed is in Burlington, where I can't afford to live.

I'm originally from upstate NY, so the weather won't scare me away. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Have you considered Dartmouth-Hitchcoock in New Hampshire? You can choose to live on either side of the Connecticut River, in either NH or VT, and you should be able to find an affordable rental within a 30 minute drive. Windsor, VT comes to mind. It's a dump as far as Upper Valley towns go (( just sold a house there) but since you don't have kids to send to school, you may find it more affordable than some other towns on the NH side. But you'll pay state income tax in VT.

I worked at DHMC for many years and it is an excellent hospital. Central Vermont will not provide you with the learning opportunities that DHMC offers, and you will be a bit more isolated there. I don't know about Masters programs in nursing in either area, though. You may have to look elsewhere if that's the case. Good luck in your search.

Ditto Dartmouth Hitchcock. Great hospital. Other VT towns to look at within commuting distance which may be a bit more affordable include Fairlee, Bradford, South Royalton, Windsor (as mentioned above).

Yes, I've looked at Dartmouth-Hitchcoock before, and crossed NH off my list because there aren't master's degrees in a clinical nursing field (I'm thinking FNP or mental health NP at this point). I'm not interested in nurse ed, public health, or those types of degrees. It seems like VT and NH aren't going to fit me at this point in my career.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Default Nh/vt

As somebody who is finishing their NP in December, lives in Vermont and works in New Hampshire I would advise you not to limit yourself to an on campus FNP or mental health program. Nearly all of the MSN programs have distance learning or low residency options that are designed for working nurses.

I consider Springfield affordable (30+ year resident), and there's a commuter bus ($2 if you can afford it) to DHMC every weekday. Plus, of course, Springfield Hospital, the Medical Center and other local hospitals in Windsor, Claremont, NH.

Thanks matthewgvt, but I'm weary of online programs. I've never taken a good online class.

I like to work the nightshift and nurses usually work weekends, so I doubt a commuter bus from Springfield would work for me.

Thanks all, but I don't think New England's going to work for me.
