HI folks,
we are driving to Woodstock, VT tonight, coming form Northern Virginia area.

Earliest we can leave is 6pm, so we'll do half the trip tonight (two kids, etc)

Google is routing me via I95 to I91

I want to avoid NYC area, and avoid traffic as much as possible.

Should I go via Albany instead?

Any help would be great. thanks

I would come over northwest and get hook onto 81 north somehow. that is how we go to VT and the traffic is not bad. In NY you can then get onto 88 to Albany and from there into VT. Or you can go east from the Scranton area of PA, I think 84 but not sure. That will take you through a bit of NY north of the city, CT where you can take 91 north through MA right up in to the eastern side of VT.

I have almost never had problems taking the NJT through to the Ft. Lee/Ridgefield exit, getting into the left lane, keeping on that for the next 4 miles, when it turns into the entrance for the GW Bridge, then the Henry Hudson Parkway to Sawmill, then to the Cross County, which turns into the Wilbur Cross Pkwy in Ct and joins I-91 in Meriden. Avoids all that NYC stuff and is about the shortest route to Vermont that you can get.

AVOID the GWB 95/91.
Route north to Albany via PA or NJ.

Take 95 to New Jersey turnpike , then switch over to the GSP at exit 12 I believe. Follow that all the way up to 287 and the Tappan Zee bridge. Then take 684 north to 84 east to 91n. You miss all of NYC and is more direct then going through PA.
