Default Any Teaching Jobs?

How are the overall teaching opportunities in the state? My husband and I are both teachers (secondary and elementary, respectively) and are looking to relocate from Michigan, where there is close to no teaching jobs available anywhere! VT is one of the states we are considering, but want to know how easily we would be able to find jobs. Any help is appreciated!

There are jobs in science and phsysics. Social studies and English are much harder to find.

I would urge you to contact the state capitol and find out about whether your certification will transfer...don't assume it will. I have permanent N-6 NYS cert. but because of differently requirements, I would have to do a few extra things if I wanted VT cert. (it's not worth it right now).
Don't get the wrong idea about reciprocity I was told..

As someone already said, check the reciprocity of your licensure, however, also contact vtpeerreview@comcast.net to see if you can go through the portfolio process to have your licensure approved. No classes, one 'seminar' meeting. The portfolio approval process is not exceptionally long, but costs a bit. You can teach while being in this process in many cases. Also, there are many 'alternative' schools being set up in the state (state approved) so you could probably get jobs in those - and once established, look for others. Good luck!

I moved to Vermont in 2000, and anxiously left in June, 2007. I teach elementary and there are some jobs. However, you usually have to start in an assistant position or long term sub. to work your way in. We moved to Tennessee and it is much easier here.

Special ed. teacher needed mid-year

January 25, 2008
By Sarah Hinckley Herald Staff

More than 85 children are expected to be in the Early Essential Education by mid-February, a number that exceeds last year's year-end count by at least 25 students.

The large influx is the reason Eloise McGary, director of support services, asked the Rutland City Public Schools Board of Commissioners to not wait until fall to hire an additional special educator.
