What time does the sun set in February / March? Do you think that has any baring on the "bleakness" or is it the lack of sun?

We set the clocks back the first of November.....it'll get dark 4:30-5ish on the shortest winter days.

Are you seeing clear skies on the mountain or also down below? It's not uncommon for clouds to cover the lower elevation.

Regardless of whether or not it is cloudy, there isn't much you can do about the length of the day. Having it get dark at 4PM is pretty gloomy. I have a headlamp I use to walk in the woods with my dogs, but it is too dark to walk without one after 5 PM.

For me February/March is when things start getting better lol...mornings are lighter, the sun feels warmer (even if it's just my imagination ha ha). I think Nov-Jan is probably the darkest, with regards to the days getting shorter. Especially the adjustment when the clocks are set back...that's the worst!

Frankly, all that sounds heavenly, even the Nov-Jan part. I think we are outside so much, that by the time darkness rolls around, we're headed in anyway. I looked at our photos - it's a combination of grey and clear. I agree that the reflection off the snow tends to brighten things.

Winter! Go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. Cold, dark, and the beer freezes in your hand.

Is that -30 wind chill or actual temps? Where I'm at now, it was -50 below with wind chill, it was a little chilly.

That's without wind chill. With wind chill it feels REALLY cold.
