Hi,

My wife and I are currently looking at land in the NEK and have come across a few possibilities in Newark, VT.

We live in the Champlain Islands and will be here for at least a dozen more years while the kids finish up school so we would be looking to build and use a camp that could later become a full time residence. Small (1,000 sq. ft or less) is the size building we'd be making on a lot of at least 10 acres or so.

We'd really appreciate any input from folks who know the area and can give us an idea what to expect in winter, reception from locals (not expecting the Welcome Wagon, just wondering if there are any funky local politics or issues to be aware of), access to medical care, availability of high speed internet (I work from home so this is key) etc. I've been able to find a lot from our old friend google but would appreciate some real world input.

Thanks in advance!

If you like isolation you'll like Newark. Even more isolated than the islands IMO. At least the islands are close to Burlington, Montreal, St. Albans.
Winter will be harsher than the islands. Colder and longer. Medical care-the closest hospital is in St. Johnsbury. For anything serious you'd most likely be sent to Dartmouth/Hitchcock in Lebanon, NH. You'll be doing your shopping/errands in Lyndonville or St. Johnsbury.
Burke Mountain is nearby for downhill skiing. Kingdom Trails for biking and X-Country. Lots of snowmobiling in the area too. If you like golf you have to check out Grandad's Invitational in Newark!

Thanks. That confirms what I thought. No issue with isolation and with a lifted 4x4 Suburban we get most anywhere we need to. May need to add a plow to it though!

Also looking at Wheelock, which I'm guessing would be similar in snow, isolation and drive for goods and services.

At least in Wheelock or Sheffield, you'd be closer to the interstate. I live 30 minutes from Newark and got lost there for over an hour.....Nothing until Island Pond of Lyndonville. I just like having easier access to a grocery or such.
