We're going to be building on a hillside, that will require a bit of blasting out of ledge. What have you used the resulting material for (or has your contractor just hauled it away)?

In particular, I'm wondering if the pieces are small enough to serve as a base for filling in a low-lying area to improve drainage; or barring that, could they be used to build a wall or something else useful? Or are the pieces so varied in size and shape that they're not really good for anything?

Our house was built in 2000 and we know that some blasting was done when it was built, based on what we've been told. Definitely ledge under us. There are boulders EVERYWHERE in the landscaping. Not sure if all of them came from here, but I'm sure some of them did. Big ones surround the pond, and there's two stone patios and other stone work.

Good question, LOL. And here I thought I would sound savvy by calling it ledge instead of "rocky outcrops". It's grayish, so I'd assume a slate or granitic type, but I'll see if our neighbors have more info.

Probably schist. Yes, it can be used for fill. It isn't typically used for walls.
