I liked Annapolis, MD when I visited there last year. Kinda reminded me of Burlington a bit.

It's not south, but west - Boulder CO. A lot like Burlington, but bigger. It doesnt get as cold there as it does in Burlington.

In our research, Charlottesville, VA came very close, and this was confirmed by some on this board as well...

I second Boulder, CO. My folks lived there for 10 years and said it was kind of a bigger version of Burlington. Beware that they left because it was getting a little populous and exposed.
If that's too big, go a little more South to Durango, CO. Great outdoor oriented culture all year round, population 14K, Purgatory ski resort...

Athens Georgia is a cool funky college town like Burlington. If you can take the heat.

Boulder CO doesn't get as cold as Burlington??? My experience of one of the coldest days I've lived through was in Boulder. Until the lake freezes, Burlington can be downright balmy if the wind isn't blowing.
I lived in Athens GA for a few (colder) months and started to become ill with all the red and black and bulldogs. Not too many rocks to climb there either.
Charlottesville VA is the "in" spot right now, but prices have been going through the roof, and the terrain limits growth outside the city limits.
Ashville NC? Haven't been there in ages, but it seemed like a good place back then.
