I will agree that gun owners need to be cognizant of firearms laws, safety and use of their individual firearms. That is a given. Just like the owner of an automobile needs to be cognizant of motor vehicle laws related to operation, inspection, etc. The difference being that owning/operating a motor vehicle is NOT a right under the constitution, it is a privilege. Still common sense dictates that a gun owner use their firearm in a safe and responsible manner. And the majority of firearms owners do just that. But just as with automobiles unexpected things happen with firearms such as thefts and accidents. You don't generally get punished if your car is stolen do you? I know, you are going to say "It depends on the circumstances". Same thing with an accident, generally, unless there is some provable neglect involved. People get killed/maimed in auto accidents like they do in firearms accidents. Accidents are accidents and you can argue that they, like thefts, are for the most part avoidable. And maybe you are right. But at what cost, of liberty and dollars, to the owner? I do concede, as in another post, that like automobiles, firearms and alcohol do not mix.

Hi all-This is primarily a Vermont relocation forum and not the appropriate forum to discuss general gun ownership/laws etc. What originally started off as a Vermont specific topic about a bill (that has now been declared dead) has veered to a general discussion. You can continue to discuss general gun issues and more in the Guns & Hunting forum (for gun specific discussion) or the Politics Forum (for gun laws) here at City-Data. Thanks!
