Our freshman US representative, Jim Douglas, was organizing bus trips for Vermont seniors to buy their medications in Canada while then-governor Bernie Sanders had a radio ad telling Vermonters to avoid rising costs by asking for generic brands at their pharmacy.

Oh, wait a minute. Switch those names. It was the dangerous radical who was actually helping Vermonters do something about being ripped off.

Looking out for the people and hurting the ultra rich corporations is considered radical politics in America now.

It's really sad.

*snort* Bernie has been whistleblower for years on congress shenanigans. If you consider the mess that America is today to be normal, then yes, he is un-American. If you were to read your history, you would discover that he would have fit in very nicely with the Americans attempting to stem the take-over of the country by the banking interests. ... but then most people don't read history and wouldn't even be able to tell you where they were born or what their name was if it wasn't required on government forms.

Anyway, "middle class" in Vermont has always been a tenuous thing. Some local merchants used to fill the category, and a few of the farmers, but mostly there were a lot of folks living a hardscrabble existence before moving to greener pastures. Migration paths of ex-pat Vermonters are actually documented in some historical texts.
