Hi Gang - Thanks for the great feedback... Will definitely take the cell and broadband warnings to heart. Made that mistake here in E. CT and had to "fund" 400ft. of Charter Cable up my hill for high speed internet, and have to have a signal booster to use Verizon or AT&T in most of the house!

We've booked a week this summer on the lake and will explore some of the towns that have been mentioned. Most intrigued by Middlebury and Montpelier at this point, but will certainly post up some observations later in the year.

I've lived in Montpelier since 1983 and it's a great town, great place to raise kids, with very good schools.

Housing is a challenge, but there's a great sense of community, live music every week, professional theater, good restaurants, a great park in the middle of town. It's pretty close to within your parameters for skiing, airport, and we have broadband and good cell coverage. Definitely come check it out.

I live in St Albans. We moved here 25yrs ago and the reasons we chose here are just as valid today!
Jay Peak!!! Easy access and fresh investment!
Here we have a vibrant growing downtown with a wonderful Farmer's Market that can now run all year thanks to having Main St. space thanks to the good folks of Twiggs.
We have a hospital, paid Fire & Police an EMT service.
Local Vets for the pets.
Amazing Rec Dept!!!!!
BFA H/S has AP level programs and a Performing Arts Center. The Tech Center is the BEST!!!!
Local movie theater
Local Hotels & Many wonderful choices of eateries, coffee house!
14th Star Brewery!
Grocery stores (Price Chopper is 24hrs), Walmart too!
Well supported sports events
Did I miss anything????

I'm further south than you're considering but I wanted to mention that President Obama was pushing for high speed broadband to rural areas. I first received notice about the local phone company's intention to bring it into town 2 years ago when the contractors was running the lines. My broadband was hooked up this past February. I still need a booster for my service here, but then again, I need a booster for my home on LI.

When you are out looking at homes, ask about the status of that community's broad band service is.

Tobin12, you missed Burton Island! Awesome summer camping via bike and pedestrian ferry from St. Albans. Not to mention great access to both Montreal and Burlington because of its central location on the Interstate. St. Albans is a great value and underrated by many in Chittenden County. The Maple Festival is also a fun St. Albans activity. Good local restaurants, like you say, plus some of the chains like Subway, etc. for when you need convenience or with your kids. It is a true Vermont community.
