Oh great, another meaningless ranking. Alabama rates as "dependent" primarily because of the large space program in a relatively small state. Now all the blue states can go "SEE! We told you the red states were bad!" Stuff it.

It's not "meaningless." It is a piece of propaganda designed to fortify the feelings of people whose ignorance of civic life and government is coupled with their underlying sense of anger and fear to make them even more susceptible to wingnut manipulation.

If you read George Lakoff's Don't Think of an Elephant, you'll see where they're coming from and how susceptible they are to demagogy.
