Anyone have any experience with these towns? Schools are of course a primary concern. How do these towns compare in terms of daily life.......in both winter, and summer. Is Stowe even more of a resort town than Manchester?

What about daily shopping, medical services, restaurants, things to do? Is there a strong sense of community in these towns? I've also been reading that Stowe has a lot of transients, and that much of the population leaves during the warmer months. Any truth to that? More so than in Manchester/Dorset? Any info comparing these towns would be much appreciated.

........Oh, and how does the Skiing compare?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Manchester/Dorset and Stowe are "resort" towns...so yes. You'll get a lot of second home owners who only live there part time. I had a friend who lived in Stowe in the 90s and disliked it for this reason. If you are considering Stowe I'd consider Waterbury instead. Schools have a good reputation. There are a couple small grocers in Stowe and larger supermarkets in Waterbury or Morrisville. Copley Hospital in Morrisville is the closest hospital.
Manchester/Dorset area also has quite a few second homes. It is a popular weekend destination for NYC folks. Lots of designer outlet stores, inns, restaurants, etc. Burr & Burton is a great high school. Not sure about elementary schools. Plenty of shopping right in Manchester. Closest hospitals are in Bennington or Rutland.
IMO skiing is better at Stowe. Hands down.

If you can afford the real estate, Stowe is kind of a no-brainer. Burlington is a full service small city 45 minutes away. There are enough professionals who live there and commute down to the university/hospital/med school and the IBM plant that the place has a pulse even in the shoulder seasons. In the other resort towns, the people who live there are either retired to their former vacation homes or working service sector jobs for the tourist industry with some telecommuters and the odd trustifarian thrown into the mix.
