I just got to see what the airport building looks like now, and it is nice. The manager was on an intro to a garden show that happened to be doing Vermont segments. I wouldn't have seen the new building otherwise.
I remember when there was a small terminal building with an entrance, and two doors on the runway side, one saying Gate 1 and the other Gate 2. It always cracked me up that there would be the big announcements about "Mohawk flight 12 arriving at Gate 1" when gate 2 was a few feet away. I also remember that flying was much friendlier back then. Cushy seats in the DC3s, blankets and pillows, and a real stewardess serving good food, drink, and cigarettes.
I gave up flying in commercial jets altogether after repeated incidents of casual abuse by the airlines. "We're overbooked, here is a chit for a sleezebag hotel and we'll pick you up at 5:30am for the next flight. Sorry it is after midnight and the food voucher is worthless." or what was increasingly common - "After serving you soft drinks and suggesting that you remain hydrated, the pilot has decided to enforce the fasten seat belt sign. You may NOT go to the bathroom for the next two hours." I used to enjoy flying, and I'd rather have the good memories than the horror stories. I've found that driving has made long trips feel like real journeys again, and that the world is back to being big. Life in the slower lane can be better.
