Hi - I'm under contract for a house in the Windsor area and wondering if I should do a pest inspection as part of the inspection process. Are things like termites, carpenter ants, etc. a big problem in the area?

Any other local advice as far as home inspections go that i should know about?

Many thanks!

I am not familiar with that area specifically, but it is always a smart idea to get a termite inspection when buying a home.

We are a bit further north and we were told termites not an issue up here - but carpenter ants are. Also test the water, and radon.

Carpenter ants are a potential problem anywhere in the state. I'd have the inspection done for the pests.

Termites have been identified in Bellows Falls, and I heard about ten years ago they'd migrated northward to Windsor, but I've never heard of them being much of a problem.

I have never heard of termites in Vermont. When I built my log house a lot of the log home books said to put termite shields on the foundation, I asked around and no one had heard of them. I have a house in Florida that is full of termites and they are everywhere down here but never seen one in VT. Carpenter ants are another story. I have had those in my log house in VT. Also my fathers framed house. The thing about them is they only live in rotted or rotting wood as far as I can tell. I do not believe they infest good solid wood. If you find carpenter ants you will likely find some other underlying issue, a leak or some such thing that has undermined the wood perhaps where it can not be readily seen.

Sorry for the slow follow up - thank you for these replies. I had a pest inspection done and luckily they didn't find anything!
