Snow is a four letter word describing the other form of rain. We are planning on snowbirding or moving after I retire. We will not miss the snow. Or teh freezing rain. Or the cold that creates both.

The house painting thing is mainly because a few people chose to paint their houses bright teal with hot pink trim, pink with purple polka dots, neon orange with electric blue and bright red trim, etc. I tried to find a picture of the teal house - it's atrocious. They're actually pretty liberal - more or less anything that doesn't impact the housing values of the surrounding properties is ok.

Ciaooooo!!
Ok, so I have read all the good and bad things about Vermont. I have never been to Vermont but I love the snow and outdoors. I am the mother of 3 boys, we are from Oklahoma. I live in the country, enjoy camping, hunting and fishing. My boys love to be outdoors.
I want information on the Hyde Park area. Surrounding areas are fine. Where ever I move they have to had DSL...I go to school online...or at least the capability of satellite internet...no dial-up...lol
I want to rent something first, I go to school for Architecture and Interior Design, once I finish school I would like to buy some land and build a home is my current plan. As far as housing and taxes and everything else people are griping about. Well, COLORADO is expensive....everywhere you go...
If anyone is willing to give me information on different towns in that area, renting, jobs etc etc or even websites I can go and research that would be wonderful.
Also, if there are any teachers I need some information from you as well....I need information on what credentials you need to teach in Vermont. my friend is finishing his degree in linguistics and is moving to the US around the end of Feb....he speaks fluent Italian, Spanish and he obviously speaks English. He would like to teach Italian and/or Spanish (or work as a translator if anyone knows of a company) any information is helpful....thank you!
Thanks...Chelle

Your best bet would be to come and visit before moving here. It may be very different than what you expect. You may have an easy time getting a job, but your friend might have a tough time. There may be a school with an Italian program, but none that I know of. In fact schools are starting to cut arts in order to reduce their budgets. I don't even know if there is a need for translators. Vermont is one of the least cultural diverse states in the union.
I agree that other states are expensive to live in, but the incomes in Vermont are very low while the tax rate is one of the most expensive in the country. Two of our friends are teachers and both work second jobs.
Do yourself a favor and come here for a visit before you move here. You may love it and find a good job or the opposite may happen as well. There is more to consider than just a place to live and a place to work. You will find a bunch of info on this forum to help you figure things out.

Last year in Stowe, the school board decided to add Chinese language to the curriculum at the expense of French...French will be gone in another three years I believe. While I understand the need for learning Chinese in the new global market, I think it's a shame they can't provide for both, seeing as how close they are to Canada.

welcome to the back woods of west virginia oop's I mean vermont, city slicker, oop's i mean flatlander
You are the fall guy for all the states problems.
The locals who inherited the farm or old family homestead have nearly exempted themselves from taxes and expect anyone with any sort of decent income to carry most of the tax burden on top of paying a high price for a house while they cry poor and live off welfare or at least don't pay hardly any taxes while working part time or seasonal jobs.
Internal Revenue Service has state tax statistics, go look them up and see how few earn a decent living in the state and out of the few that do earn some money a lot of them work for the government.

Gas is high, heating oil even higher, groceries about average, utilities very high. Basically, Vermonts negative points revolve around economics and for some the politics. The main selling points from my experience involve the rural and historical atmosphere along with attractive scenery and ample opportunities for outdoor recreation pursuits. If money were no object then Vermont would be a keeper, but sad to say for most of us finances dictate on what amount of our time we can devote toward hobbies and recreation. Then for many folks here when they reach the time in their lives where work should not eat up their time to get out and enjoy pursuits they are still faced with cost of living issues. As many have suggested it is very wise to come up and visit not in the tourist mode, but checking out the things and issues which would become a recurrent aspect of being a year round resident.

Good points, Flu....
It cost us minimum 490.00 a month between
electric and oil just to stay 60 degrees 6 months
out of the year. Combine that with having to drive
almost everywhere and you are talking about a whole
lot of money wasted, or getting no return on. Thats a lot
of money on little pay.
