Not so bad...
I was born and raised in Waterbury, Vermont and lived there until I graduated high school in '05. I thought it wasn't a great place to live due to the fact that there's not as much to do as other states (like FL, or Cali). So, I joined the military to get out and see other places. Well, I went to Texas for 4 months and then got stationed in Japan. While it is an experience I would trade for anything, I have also never missed VT more. It is a wonderful place to grow up. And while there's not a LOT of opportunity, it is a good place for kids to stay focused on school and jobs. There are less distractions and it provides a good environment.

I'm envious - but DO take your bug spray. The trees haven't leaved out at the higher els up this way and you'll be miserable without it!
And bachristie: Your post didn't go unnoticed. Welcome!

Chevy Chase's comment had it right, " I couldn't be more surprised than if I had woken up to find my head sewn to the carpet."

I never said that civil unions or independent candidates help one's bottom line. Aristotle said, and I'll paraphrase, "Show me a nation's leader and I'll show you the people who elected him."
Independent candidates, civil unions, environmental activism are all expressions of that collective consciousness---my point being that Burlington represents the best of an engaged, concerned, participatory form of governance.
If you want to live in a place with the best bottom line, then by all means follow your little heart wherever the money and hot job is, but it won't lead to Vermont. People don't move to places like Vermont for that, they're after something more enriching than money alone could ever provide.

what is this culture thing people crave ?
I used to live in CT and didn't see anything i would call a culture down there. A cult of idiots trying to out snob each other is more like it.
Welcome to Green Acres, if Park Ave is more your liking, live there and don't come here and complain there is nothing here. Vermont has plenty to do for active people, little to do for lazy people who think going shopping and out to eat is doing something. It's not the place for pampered prissy people, go someplace else if you crave that type of life and put up with all the yuk that goes with it.

I Haven't Disappeared
Hi everyone. This is arel.
I haven't disappeared. I've been having trouble with my internet connection at home, so I have been logging onto this site from work. So I haven't had the luxury of spending a lot of time online. And I haven't had much to ask or contribute recently. But I have been reading people's posts.
Well, here is a brief update. I am pretty definitely moving to Brattleboro ASAP, hopefully before the coming winter. It depends on when my house sells. It is on the market, and I've received several offers.
Regarding the decision to move: I've done a lot of research, for which I thank all of you on this forum. And I have also done a lot of psychological homework. Ultimately, it was a no brainer, but I've had a lot of resistance to leaving Brooklyn. Somehow, I made the internal shift which enabled me to take action, but now I am dealing with practical realities, e.g. the falling real estate prices.
I will keep you all posted. Thanks, Dwatted Wabbit, for thinking of me.

Glad you have finally decided, Arel.
Spring has been lovely though thoughts of horrible winter and 'planning' are in the back of my mind (as in working as close as I can to where we move next).
Our housemate (the one who had the apartment below us) moved out last week and moved back to Houston. She'd been here 2 years and the weather & lack of social life just drove her away.
I told her I envy her the 'easy' shopping (as in not taking 2 hours or more plus travel time) and good libraries. Vermont tries but the library is pitiful and this being a 'wealthy area' they should spend less money on 'ski hills' or something and more on better libraries.

The library thing cheeses me off as well. We have the highest per capita spending on public schools in the country and our libraries suck. VT librarians do try hard. I'd much rather spend less on schools and more on libraries.

Arel, that is great. I hope your place in Brooklyn sells and things move along.
Your cats should enjoy the new sniffings that the breeze will bring by in Vermont. New smells for their kitty brains to analyze.
What a big move this is. The adventure continues...
