I went to school at NYU in NYC...spent a lot of time in the Village, and specifically, Washington Square Park. I don't frequent the immediate NYU area much anymore, but I was there Tuesday night and walked through the park. A good chunk of it was under construction...did some research on Wednesday and was horrified about what they are doing.
There is a very large open fountain in the middle of the park. There is a large arch on one end of the park, that dead-ends to Fifth Avenue. Apparently the fountain was not centered through the arch, so they are MOVING it. Twenty feet. So that people driving/walking on Fifth Avenue can see it through the arch.
They are spending $25 million dollars and cutting down a bunch of 50-100 year old trees to move a fountain. In the process, they are also going to remove several benches and chess tables and provide less seating for the public.
On top of it all, the original designer of this park did NOT want the fountain centered. Apparently, there were tons of protests about this, but it was approved anyway (apparently, there wasn't much of a public debate because I never saw it mentioned anywhere at all). Meanwhile, the city raises taxes, and complains they have no money.
I realize this has nothing to do with VT, but I just wanted to post it as an example of frivolous spending in these tough times. I really, really wonder who it is that runs these cities/states and how to shake some sense into them!

Following in the vein -- I just heard on the news that there is a big fight (which parties have now filed papers in court) over the move of Alexander Hamilton's home. What is going on in NYC? The have money to burn to move monuments and historic homes, but when it comes to the schools, they are milking the rest of the state dry!

He's doing his best though to force himself on other states, as far away as Georgia (frivolous lawsuits against gun dealers for example). That guy truly annoys me.

[quote=GypsySoul22;3983069]Last winter was BAD, BAD, BAD but even the longtimers admitted it...
Finally: A retort I can use when it's pointed out I'm not a native: I'm a "longtimer".
However - weather strikes people differently: I enjoyed this past Winter enormously. And on days like this, I think back about it fondly.
I know how to dress for Winter weather - No matter if I'm splitting wood or if I'm wearing a tie.
This weather, however, I haven't figured out how to dress for.
I can't wait for it to stop.

LOL, he does seem to be quite the opportunist and shifts with the breeze. But, on the other hand he does embody the principal that it takes money to make money. Even though he rides the subway, a Fiorello LaGuardia he is not.

There's only so much a person can remove before risking arrest!
Still no naked person sightings in Brat., but I haven't been through there much the past few months.

He should be arrested and prosecuted for those actions. Way illegal, and far beyond the boundaries or authority of his job description.
