VT has been planning to widen RT 7 north of Rut. for 25 years. The initial budget for the whole project(buying land, salaries, material, etc..) has been spent on planning without a single bit of construction. Between NY and VT I'd give the road construction maintenance nod to NY but we certainly have experienced different roads in the two states. Point is VT plans and plans(and spends$$$$ on planning) and nothing happens.

VT might take the cake on the planning delays -- 25 years?!?!?!
I try to remember which roads are federal, which roads are state roads and which roads are local roads. I find the paved roads in VT (mostly southern as that is the bulk of my experience) to be better surface wise than those in my region of NY.
Our local town (Brookhaven has 483K people and is smaller than VT but more densely populated) has got to have some of the worst town maintained roads anywhere. State routes through the township are better. County roads through the township aren't wonderful.
I don't know as far as in Vermont, what jurisdiction routes like 103, 11, 10, 106, 100, 4, etc., are. Are they state maintained? Or are they maintained by the townships through which they run?

where in florida did you move from? I am living in south florida right now and contemplating a move to burlington. I haven't made up my mind 100% yet, but i am going to visit tomorrow. I am really tired of the 11 months of summer temperatures and love snowboarding. I am afraid that I will be bored though (just because thats what everyone says), not that I do much of anything in florida anyway

Why do people leave Vermont? To shop at a Target, of course.
I don't know anyone who is bored in Vermont.....only boring people are bored.

Being bored will depend on what you like to do and your age as well. If you are an outdoors type, you will love it here. People of all ages who spend time outdoors year round love it here. The main drawbacks are that it's not a cheap place to live, good paying jobs are not as plentiful as other parts of the country and for some, but not all, the long winters. Without a question the winters are the biggest drawback for most. I work at FAHC in Burlington and our department has lost more staff due to the winters. People move to Vermont not knowing what a real winter is like.

Yup. The problems with Vermont are the economy - low salaries and high prices - and the winter.
I just went through my first Vermont winter. It wasn't that different from a New York winter, except that there was more snow. I got by with the winter clothes I brought from New York. Winter didn't bother me at all, except when I had trouble with my furnace in the fall! I had initially been nervous about driving on rural roads in the winter, but I was fine in my little Nissan Sentra with studded snow tires.
I live in southeastern Vermont, though, not Burlington. Winters here are more mild than in northern Vermont. Sutheastern Vermont is like Vermont Lite.

its cold. and miserable. I hate snow. Winter is forever, I am a summer person. Me and Vermont just don't mix. I am thankfully moving to FL in August. Better climate and cheaper to live.

Three of my former coworkers left VT last year
They all left for financial reasons. Two were native Vermonters and one had lived here since college.
One was a young man who realized he and his new wife would never be able to afford a decent starter home b/w the price of real estate, taxes, and his paltry salery.
One was a middle-aged woman who got tired of working two jobs for several years and still struggling financially.
One was a 62-year-old woman who realized that it would be much more expensive to retire in Vt than down south.
The young man moved to Maine and is very happy there. The two women moved to North Carolina (one moved to the research triangle and the retired woman moved to the mountains). They have both come by the office to visit and seem much happier and relaxed.
My husband wants desperately to leave Vt even though he doesn't mind the winters and works part time at a ski resort so he can ski every weekend. He worries about how little we make and how we'll get by after retirement.
If I left it would be partly because the long winters are starting to wear on me and partly because I know there would be better career opportunites for myself and college opportunites for my kids in other areas of the country.
