Default Shoveling Roofs in Vermont

I'm trying to find some comparisons - I had my 1600 square foot ranch house roof shovelled - about 3.5 feet of snow and ice on it and I believe these two men charged a ridiculous amount, saying it took them 16 hours to complete!

What I'd like to know is if any of you paid to have your roofs shoveled and if so:
1. what is the square footage of your house
2. Is it one storey or two
3. How many hours did it take to shovel
4. How much snow was on it (approximately).

Any information you can give me would be most appreciated.

If you get a good snow rake you can take most of it off the roof as it comes, and save spending money on someone else doing it when it builds up so bad, excepting the real bad storms that happen occasionally. If the ice is on top of a layer of snow it comes off easily.

If you had 3.5 feet of snow on your roof than your lucky it didn't cave in. You should never let that much snow collect. If you had ice buildup I can easily see that it could take 2 hard days to remove all of it. I get the feeling you have no idea how hard it is to move that much snow off a roof.

I know this is old.. but i'm doing some research. if you have a 12/12 roof, would you ever need to rake a roof? Would you need a metal roof even with a 12/12 roof to make sure things slide off more easily?

this roof raking really doesn't sound like something i want to have to worry about in the winter!!!

The guy picks the hottest day of the year to ask about roof raking...

My 12/12 shingled roof needs raking. My 12/12 metal roof does not.

I'm not sure of my roof pitch, but the first year I was here I had to rake the ends. I installed a standing seam roof and don't have to rake it ever now.

If you do a web search, there is a tool like a slip-n-slide on a pole that can be used for removing snow from many roofs.

Right now, at 96 degrees, I don't think I would mind raking my roof, because it would be cold. Ask me that same question in January, and you will get a very different answer! It's amazing how each season makes you forget the others! I wonder what it would be like to live in a climate where it is never too not, never too cold. Would it change you as a person?

Might need to reverse things and shovel some ice onto the roof now.
