Having spent my first full winter in VT in decades, it wasn't as bad as I though (Former snowbird). After years of heating with wood when we were here, I can't get over stepping in to a warm house when I get home (and the landlord pays for the heat!)..

As for lackluster bread, you aren't looking hard enough. If you are anywhere between WRJ and Montpelier, look for La Panciata.

One thing VT has in abundance is small artisanal food producers.

My main reason for leaving is I'm tired of winter. It lasts forever and it's very grey and dreary. I'm ready for a new adventure in the sunny South.

VT is not a horrible place to live. I'd never say that. It all depends on what a person wants. Hope you are very happy here.
Well thank you so much for your good wishes!
I can totally understand your need for a change, more Sun.
As an avid gardener I am slightly jealous of my Virginia friends flowering spring bulbs, her ability to grow longer. Up here on the vt mountainside, all those bulbs I lovingly planted last fall, are buried under 5 feet of plowed snow! Gonna be awhile I guess.

But for me, the summers south of even nj are too hot anymore and the cultural differences even further south had me change direction.
Maybe the Global Warming folks are right and I'll be sunbathing in my blueberry patch in April 2023! Last November up here was a gift for sure!

Anyway, all my very best to you DC, wherever you land.
Just Drop off your snow shovel at the bottom of my driveway (you'll never make it up top for the mud, lol), on your way out. I'll be needing a few more! Lol

Farmers, retired high level executives, mechanic, Licensed Nursing Asst, factory workers, lab workers, para-educator, teacher, carpenter, mason, young, old, rich, poor, and even someone most here can see on TV just about every night. And the significant differences in backgrounds and socio-economic status didn't matter at all.
Hi there Biker!
Yes, this!
The human factor.

I will have to keep searching for that elusive bread Snowbird.
I'm down here outside of Brattleboro. I have found some yummy artisinal breads for sure, but crave my nj Italian bread. Might have to just load up next trip down

Yes, NJ Italian bread. It has been a very long time since I had it, but yes it is very very good. Not worth living in NJ for though.

Hope you checked for deer compatibility before planting those bulbs. They LOVE to eat them, except for daffodils.

Yes, back in Jersey, along with the great Italian bread, were swarms of deer. They do love the Tulips, but seem to leave my mommas iris bulbs alone, as well as those lovely, cheerful daffodils. Planted those

I always hear people saying how high VT taxes are. I think that VT has a low cost of living. Hubby & I are retired and on a fixed income. But, we own 3 houses (two in Vermont & one in Puerto Rico) and we only owe on one. If we lived in other parts of the country, we probably wouldn't be able to own even ONE house. And for what it's worth, two of our houses are on the market-the one in PR & the one we owe on.

Whenever we travel, I always sing this song:
