Vermont Maple Sugar Open House Weekend-Will the Sap Run?!
This weekend (March 29-30) is Vermont Maple Sugar Open House Weekend. Will the sap run? It's 20 degrees out right now. Yikes!
Vermont Maple Sugar Makers' Association & Vermont Maple Foundation
According to Wikipedia, in 2007 VT produced 650,000 gallons, followed by Maine and New York (225,000 gallons). Our neighbor, NH produces less than 100,000 gallons a year.

Grade B is my favorite. Yours?

I like mine dark and heavy, forget that overpriced thin light stuff, it doesn't have the flavor the "lower" darker grades do.

Me too. Grade B or Grade A dark amber. Yum. Makes me want some fresh blueberry pancakes right now. Darn, I won't be able to go to Eatons Sugar House until the spring.

I suppose that's the case, I've not bought it from a store bottled and graded in a long time, I get it from some people I know who make a little every year.

So far the sugarmakers are not boiling much but hopefully that will change this week. I was talking to Burt Morse up at the Morse Farm on Easter Sunday and he said the sap so far is extra sweet this year as it was only taking about 30 gallons of sap to make a gallon of the sweet stuff.
I think that 650,00 figure is abit off as the Vermont production is in 400,000-450,000 range with 2004 a very good year with 500,000. Even tho Vermont is #1 in the USA, it is dwarfed by Quebec's production.

The sap should run today (if it got cold enough last night).

A local producer here in southern New Hampshire has had the best syrup season in the last few years.
