Favorite Tent Camping Sites?
Anybody have any favorite tent camping sites in Vermont, and I guess New England for that matter?

We like the Vermont State Parks. Button Bay, Branbury, and Grand Isle are the ones we hit up most. Vermont State Parks
Not in New England, put Putnam Pond near Ticonderoga, NY is nice as well: Putnam Pond - NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation

Having done the Long Trail several times there are are dozens of sites I have found which made excellent sites either for the view or the deep forest with water nearby. For easy car access and more solitude than what state parks could provide the several hundred miles of US Forest Service roads within the boundary of the Green Mountain National Forest offer what they term primitive or dispersed camping in some very nice locations. For information on this and detail maps you can either contact the USFS or if in the area stop at one of the district ranger stations in Manchester, Rutland, Middlebury, or Rochester.

We car camp in Vermont, and recommend Mount Philo, Camels Hump, and Queechee Gorge State Parks. As we often mix camping with visiting friends, Queechee was close to their home. Mt Philo we camp at when doing things around the Burlington area. Camels Hump is just beautiful (like most of Vermont!).
All of our experiences with the state parks have been just fantastic, btw.
As a family we prefer to reserve a shelter, mostly because it always rains when we camp , but it also gives us more space in camp and we don;t need to pack camp chairs.
A view from Mt Philo...

There are so many it's hard to pick a couple. As mentioned the Vermont State Parks are awesome, our favs are Emerald Lake, Riker Pond in the Groton State Forest and Silver Lake.

I like the national forest lands at Big Branch and Peru Peak Wilderness areas. Rarely that many people around, but you'll have to hike in, can't drive in. Beautiful area.
