Seems like VT is trying to improve cell coverage, or at least make the cell phone companies more honest about their coverage maps.

How hard? I’ve been considering a move to VT partly(very small part) because of their remote worker incentive. Were you house hunting in remote locations or is the state largely not wired for high speed internet? Internet is a big requirement of working remote.

At the time we were looking primarily in Stowe, which is definitely not anyone's definition of remote in Vermont. There are parts of Stowe that are remote, but we didn't look there specifically because, at the time, there was only dial-up available (this is 6-7 years ago).

I need high-speed internet for my job, and the local cable company was the only one that I felt comfortable using. We put an offer on one house only after I confirmed with the cable company that they could run cable there for a cost of $5-7K. I have family who has a house about one mile out of the village off the very populated mountain road - they are out of the cable area and have horribly slow DSL. They have spoken to their neighbors and are considering pooling funds to get the cable company to bring service to them.

On the other hand, here in Waterbury we have Comcast which is great. Morrisville also has Comcast. But it doesn't go everywhere - I know folks just a few miles away who don't have the Comcast option. So it is very location specific.

There are parts of the state that probably won't ever have high speed simply because of logistics, population, and terrain. Depending on where you choose to go, it might not be a problem. But definitely do your research!

Default I use VTel

I too work from home. VTel has the fastest fiber optics in the country (according to their website) and I've never had issues with connectivity. My internet speed and connection is as good here as it was in Boston. However, VTel only covers a small area in Southern Vermont, so you'd have to find a house in that area.

Cell phones: My spouse took advantage of VTel's free cell phone promo, but the service is unreliable. I use Verizon, but I can only get a connection down in the village or nearby towns, which means I need to leave home to see if I have any voicemails. Texting, however, works great.

Our VTel landline is completely reliable.

Yep. The cell coverage claimed by the major cellular operators is a huge lie. Check the "Challenge" check box and look at all the state highway where AT&T and Verizon report "good" coverage where there is none. It's a big public safety problem. If your car breaks down in -20F, you can't call for help.
