What do you mean by selectivity? UVM has an acceptance rate of of almost double of UCSD's. It seems to me that San Diego is a lot more selective than UVM.

You don't like that comparison? How about Pedophile State in State College PA? That's #57 and has a median SAT score of 1247. UConn is #64 with an average SAT score of 1250.

The UVM student body is largely affluent flatlanders. For a university with minimal state funding beyond means-tested scholarships for Vermont residents and almost no endowment fund, it would have to shut the doors otherwise. It's similar to the way K-12 public schools in the poor Vermont towns are largely funded by the 17% of the housing stock owned by out-of-staters as vacation homes via Act 68.

I'm going by SAT scores. Acceptance rate is another one of those ways universities game the US News & World Report ranking. Northeastern and George Washington have been famous for gaming it.

Yeah, sure, students go to the 25 or so arbitrary public Ivys instead of the 8 real Ivys because of finances, not, say, inability to be admitted to the real Ivys.

This conversation has gone off on an "ivy" tangent vs the original post. Coming back to UVM's ranking, it is patently ridiculous that UVM should be penalized because it doesn't have enough racial diversity to suit the tastes of some. If racial diversity is the goal, then UVM should be given kudos for being far more diverse than Vermont is as a whole.

As a Vermont taxpayer I see no value in raising my taxes to subsidize kids from other States simply because they aren't white.

It’s essentially ranked the same as UNH.

As someone who grew up in NH in the 70s, and graduated at the very top of my class, I can tell you that UVM was looked at as UNH with a better ski team and higher price tag. No one was picking UVM over UNH because of academic reputation, regardless of what some author may have referred to it as.

I’m not dumping on UVM or UNH. I’m merely saying that they both had about the same reputation. I will say that ZooMass and UConn being ranked ahead of them both is interesting.

This thread is getting to be pretty obnoxious, and pretentious. A little humility is desperately needed here..

The average SAT score at UNH is 1171. UVM is 1259. The students at UVM are far stronger. This is another example of politically correct ranking criteria at US News.

Maybe.

I guess that’s what you get with a “blue state” mentality.

Bottom line is schools should be ranked on their academic performance, not on what color the students are.

People complaining that the new rankings punish UVM, or other universities in states with similar homogenous demographics, seem to miss the minuscule portion that social mobility plays in the overall rankings. Plus, unless I’m mistaken, it is based on Pell Grant recipients and not race specifically. UVM has, according to the figures I’ve been able to find, a higher percentage of Pell recipients as UCSD- to use a school mentioned earlier. How exactly is it being punished in the rankings because Vermont is not diverse?
