Hello everyone,

This is the first time posting on this site. I'm a 46 year old single male looking to relocate to Burlington from NJ. I'm in HVAC Sales and I also play music. I would like to learn more about the area. I'm familiar with Southern Vermont my mom has a house in Manchester but rents it out and there's no jobs in that area.

I would appreciate any feedback pro's and cons for a single guy my age relocating to a new state.

Thanks!!!

What are you looking for for work? The unemployment rate is really, really low. The types of jobs available are low paying service jobs. The Burlington area has a good music scene for an area it's size. Housing in greater Burlington is in high demand and is expensive. Have you been up to visit?

Hi,
Sorry for the delayed response. I've been thinking about what I would either find a job in HVAC sales but I would like to find something with good benefits. I would probably rent for a while until I get more familiar with the area. I would like something close to town so I can walk and meet new people.

I would start perusing the websites of local HVAC companies and big employers like UVM, UVM Medical Center, St. Michael's College, etc. Also check out the Seven Days newspaper classifieds. Rents are really pricy if you haven't figured that out yet. You can save some money buy living further from downtown.

I have friends in Burlington, there is a good music scene and plenty of restaurants. The guys I know are older than you and they say the social life and opportunity to meet single women is good in Burlington.

That's definitely a plus. I've been searching jobs and I have to sell my house in NJ first.

New Jersey is one of the most expensive states in the Northeast due to high taxes, especially property taxes. Don't expect Vermont to be much cheaper, it's possible your property tax will be quite a bit lower, but that might get eaten up by higher state income tax, and VT sales tax. Burlington also has local taxes, and you may find that your utilities and food and gasoline costs are higher. You will also spend more on heat in the winter since it's way colder in VT than NJ.

I'm going up to Manchester soon and I'm going to take ride up to Burlington. Any nice pubs the locals go to?
