Or 7 to 22N depends which end you are going to. going north you can get off 7(don't recall the road) and head for the Ti ferry and depending on the ferry that might be faster. The ferry stops running at 8pm. Eight bucks or so and couple of minutes to cross, wait tiime isn't bad if there is moderate traffic. Lots of traffic and you might have to wait a for an empty boat too little traffic and they won't run the ferry until more show up.

We were told Lake George, but it would appear that the place we are to stay at is in Lake Luzerne, on 9N west of Exit 21 on I-89.
Plans are shifting back and forth. Leaving from Ludlow the 4/149 route looks great.
We might be leaving from Chester/Andover and are right off Rte 11.
Let me toss another question out -- opinions and suggestions most encouraged
11W pick up 30 by Bromley, pass through Manchester and continue on 30 to 149 (just above No. Pawlet) to 149 to 9 to 9N
OR am I best off trekking 11 to 103 to Ludlow and then prescribed route by way of Ludlow?
Thanks everyone for letting me pick your driving brains!

I can't help you w/the route 11 option. Do beware that in Glens falls/Lake George village where 149-9N meet can be a bit of a traffic hassle. Lots of tourists and shoppers(outlets in Glens Falls). It is fairly predictable tourist traffic. Weekend nights are bad, Sun. afternoon bad. It's not as bad as the Long Island Parking Lot, but there are a mile or two of slow traffic possible. Enjoy it it is very pretty over that way.

I grew up on Lake George so like many routes from Vt to NY there are alot of options. I have never used the ferry, probably figured it was an expensive option but they do sound interesting. Moved to Vt in 1969 so I have driven to NY from several vt locations.
I think the old way of driving from Ludlow up to Rutland, north on Rt 7 then west on Rt 4, it took them way too long to put 65 speed limit on that highway, thru Whitehall to Ft Ann, right on Rt 149, then right on Rt 9, you could go left for about a mile to I87 then north to the Luzerne exit, about 5 miles to the intersection of Rt9/Rt9N, left on 9N to Luzerne.
It's a pretty drive.

From Chester I would definately do the 11>30>149 vs the 103 route. The only caveats is there are some turns to watch for thru Granville and like mustmove mentioned regarding the 149/9 intersection in NY, Manchester can have alot of traffic due to their outlet stores. As your cruising on Rt 149 from Granville you drive past a pretty big state prison in Comstock right before you hit Rt 4 which is a strange sight.

I've been past that prison in Comstock years ago and it did seem somewhat out of place.
This is going to involve driving some antique cars, so speed is not a priority. A scenic ride and no mountain goat grades and we'll be ok. Plans are flipping about and until the week before I won't know if I am out of Chester, Gassetts or LI. (Talk about up in the air!)
If we leave out of Chester, I am hoping to make it through Malfunction Junction in Manchester before the tourists and shoppers start getting thick.

Sounds like fun...anything to do with the annual classic car show in Stowe? BTW from Chester it's a slow long medium grade up from Londonderry and then the drive down into Manchester is abit steeper but a good road. After that it's pretty much smooth sailing. If your John Irving fan he lives in Dorset, be sure to wave if you see him.
Malfunction Junction....never heard that one...that's a good one....certainly works. I think it would be fun if it was busy with shoppers with you guys driving thru.

Not the Stowe show. This is a Ford event which is held throughout New England and the north east every September. Last year was Sturbridge, MA, next year will be over toward Laconia, NH. I've even driven to Cape Cod. LI has hosted the event 2X -- while it is fun to be the host club, it's much more fund driving to the event.
I do believe we should handle the grade from Londonderry.
I do enjoy John Irving's books. We'lll wave hi while in Dorset

Dom Deluise summers in Dorset, too, although he might not be in town this year as he is not well. DO take the Rt. 30 route as it is very, very pretty. TAKE IT SLOW in the towns.. when they say 30 mph, they mean it ! We are RAVE members.. the Rutland Car Club. And have travelled this route many times.
