I know what you mean. I lived in Chula Vista (San Diego) for two years and I missed the snow immediatlely. Especially when the Holiday Season come around.

I've never lived anywhere but New England, and I never could! I love the four seasons too much!

Hazardous Waste
hazardous waste? I'm puzzled too. Apparently with the area being so rural maybe someone is trucking in waste and secretly dumping it???

Saint Albans Homeowner
I currently live in Saint Albans (7 years). I don't know anything about hazardous waste. There has been some drugs and convenient store robberies. But it is not an everyday thing. It is very safe here. But we are leaving, not because of the safety or the town...but liberal politics....oh yes, and the neverending winter.

Hi guys,
I know this post is a couple years old, so I'm not surprised that you haven't seen the crime statistics from 2006. Which have gone way up according to the city-data page for St. Albans. Comments?
pucabear, you still in St. Albans? Tell me about the safety of the town and the liberal politics. Worse than nine years ago? The winter's OK with us.
Thanks!

It's interesting that you mentioned the crime rate in St Albans. Just this morning while watching the news there was a report about how the town is trying to increase the number of police officers. They are trying to figure out a way to pay for it. The reason for this was to combat the growing gang and crack cocaine problem as the officer stated in the report. I don't know the specific numbers, but they did a comparison to the number of crimes an officer has to respond to and it was about double what many towns officers have to respond to including Burlington.

Yes, I read the article from the Burlington Free Press on the 5th about the drug problem. My husband and I moved away from St. Albans about nine years ago and were thinking about moving back. Maybe we don't want to now, especially since we would want a place that we could retire in (albeit several years from now!) without having to worry.

There are plenty of really nice areas around St. Albans that you could live. Fairfield, Georgia, Milton etc. The problem seems to be confined to the downtown area (from what I can gather from the news).

Also, from my reading, the vast majority of crime seems to be perpetrated between criminals who know each other, deals gone bad and such. Something to think about.

Agree, I have coworkers who live in each of the above mentioned towns and they have no real complaints regarding obvious crime. Franklin County does have a problem with drug abusers who in turn will steal to support their habits, but despite the incidents occurring fairly regularly, it's still not to such a degree that it promotes a serious daily risk to law abiding folks and families. Law enforcement is very well aware of the problem people and areas and is trying to be very proactive. If the DA and courts can also function then in combination with a concerned public it is very possible to clean out the problem elements to a great degree.
