Unfortunately both trains are not a great option for skiing. The Vermonter which is the one that stops in Waterbury takes about 9 hours from NYC. The Ethan Allen Express which goes to Rutland is a decent option but only works for Killington.
Amtrak - Routes - Northeast
I have been in the ski business for many years. What are your preferences for terrain, lodging, budget etc?

Drive to a ski area - look at all the injured skiiers - retire to room at Inn - discuss rest of weekend with significant other.

Just spent a week hiking in Vt with a long time friend from Ct and he along with many of his friends have scrapped plans for winter outings (ski/snow machine) this coming winter in Vt due to economic pressures. Myself, living here I can only afford to X-ctry ski fields and snowshoe versus visting others venues. So, if conditions are right, meaning temp and snowfall, many of the popular venues would be great to visit if crowds are lower and you can afford it.

Wow! Thanks for all the advices! The traveling time via train from stamford to stowe is too long. Half the day would be good, guess I will have to go there via flight.

Hi flu189, which are the other popular venues you would recommend?

Has anyone stayed in Mount Snow or Bolton Valley before? Any feedback on these two resorts?
