At the rate young people are moving out of Vermont due to it's lack of jobs and high cost of living it won't be long before it's similar to Florida where it's hard to find a native. I think the term flatlander evolved long ago before the interstates and flying became popular, when people didn't travel as far so most of the tourist were from Massachusettes, Connecticut and southern NY which are relatively flat...except for western Mass.

momof3heatherns is on a distinguished road
They bought hundreds of thousands of rural acreage with many oak trees that were 300 yrs old or more. We have statutes in place to keep people from being able to cut these down however the villages managed to get the counties to approve the removal of these trees by saying they would leave a certain number (they did), they planted alot of palms (another thing is when u cut down a tree you have to plant 1 for every so many u cut down), and they showed the $$$, businesses and jobs, their retirement community would bring into the area. What they neglected to mention is that if a business wants to open in the Villages they have to agree to a certain percentage of their employees being retirees. Which effectively cuts down on the number of jobs available.
