underhill artill?ry
My Husband and I are in the process of buying a home in Underhill Vermont. We are freaking out about something we see on the Map and can't seem to get any info. Is the Artillery Range in Underhill still active?

Probably. Why are you freaking out over it? It has been there as long as I can remember. You'll hear an occasional muffled "braaaaaaaaaaaap" as they test fire, but that is about it. GE (in Burlington) may still be making a version of the Vulcan aircraft cannon, and IIRC that is where they are tested. Amazing bits of artillery. I've heard the force could literally air stall the plane firing the rounds, the speed and mass of projectiles are so great.

why freak out?
If you google the Ethan Allen Artillery Range it can freak one out. Especially the part about how they had to remove all the top soil because of the radioactive contamination. Don't sound to good for my garden.

Yes, it's still active. It's located in a remote part of town and cannot be accessed by the general public.
I remember being just over the mountain in Stowe one day and it sounded like a war going on LOL! I do not believe they fire artillery a lot though. Maybe a few weekends a year.

cw wingit, I just did as you suggested and found nothing referencing any radioactive issues there. There is a question about the residues from the propellants used to fire the rounds, which are some pretty unstable and toxic chemicals, and there is an effort to keep those from contaminating the surrounding groundwater. Please keep your facts accurate when posting a potentially explosive :-) comment. I guess if I lived in the area, I'd plant some super-pop popcorn rather than freak out. FWIW, I'd much rather deal with that concern than the mess in and around the Burlington barge canal, or the old gas plant on Pine Street, which everyone seems to have forgotton.

There are many other things in Vt to be concerned about other than the range which by the way is called Ethan Allen Range. Lots of nice land out there and also one of only a few biatholon training sites in the US. So for those who believe the area to be a WMD prooving ground, sorry it's not.
