BEWARE UVM police decoys for practice
Imagine my surprise when a UVM police pulled me over just after midnight last week. They had a decoy stop set up with a rookie and a seasoned officer in the car with the decoy pulled over to the right side of the right turn lane coming down on the Williston Road out of town, just before the shopping center.
The reason for the stop? So she could practice pulling people over. She said I didn't pull over completely into the next lane while passing the cruiser.
Hunter, the sargeant, and the captain all threatened me with "THE VIDEO" of my so called infraction. I said BRING IT ON. Come to find out, they had no video.
After going in to file a complaint on Monday, as I left and made the very same corner (off East Ave onto Williston Rd), I realized I DIDN'T HAVE TO CHANGE LANES AT ALL. The cruiser was pulled to the right of the turn lane. I was in the traffic lane. As it was, I pulled over a half lane more than I was required by law.
Oh, by the way, I had a driver's manual with me. The captain informed me that they go by their own laws, not the ones we go by.
When I got back to the house, I called the captain and informed him of my discovery. He just he'd make a note of it. That was it. No apology, no ripping up of the paperwork. NOTHING.
Those people have a bad reputation anyway, but they just added to it.

Perhaps maybe you looked suspicious? Did you look up the town ordinances about your minor altercation?

Mmm, what's UVM?
As for their own rules, that is too common.
Sounds like adult supervision is needed here.

^^ So is the state police version of IA feared and hated by line officers, or considered a joke?
IMO if IA is disliked, it's probably doing its job. Like a good auditor.

Listen, the state police aren't going to get involved with something as trivial as this matter. I would imagine they have more important things to do. From what I hear, UVM has a big responsibility to the community as well as Burlington PD to maintain and facilitate the vehicular and pedestrian traffic in their monitored area. Did this incident happen on campus property or off campus property?
Listen, I have been hearing reports that Burlington is the nicest place in all of the East Coast for a family with kids? Do you think otherwise? Ive been reading alot about the drug problems out there, but other than that I hear nothing else major? AND EXACTLY what is the reputation of the UNVIERSITY OF VERMONT POLICE? I'm curious because I want to move into that area and I certainly don't want to be badgered by the authorities.

I know a current UVM officer and one that just left to take a position with the feds and they are busy enough with issues on their campus to go out of their way to deal with outside violators. The fact of the matter is that they are state certified sworn police officers, hence they can enforce laws even out of their jurisdiction. The ones I know really try to not get involved in situations out of their jurisdiction and when they do they will call local or state authorities, but sometimes this resource is not available so they will take enforcement action. In any case, if you feel your rights have been violated in an enforcement action that is what court is for so represent yourself or hire an attorney. It works this way anywhere you go.

Very interesting flu189. So you know UVM officers? I have alot of friends in law enforcement down here where I live too. We have a big university and I would imagine that the same set up is in place with regards to certification. Whats it like in Burlington? You say UVM has enough to keep them busy, like what types of issues are they dealing with? I understand that that area has alot of drug incidents? What about violant crimes? I mean its one thing to read statistics, but frankly you can't believe everything on the records. Not all of it gets reported. I heard the North side of Burlington is really a drug haven. Is this true. Tell me what you know about it? Does UVM patrol this area? Whats their relationship with Burlington PD. Also, why did your friend leave UVM? Do alot of officers leave there? If so, why is that?

State law that you must pull as far as you can to left and slow down if ANY vehicle displaying blue, red, white or any combination there of. So if you A) didn't pull over B) didn't slow down then they can stop you.
