About guns - I suggest going to one of the small gun shops in your area and talking to the proprietor about your situation and asking him for his help. If he tries to sell you a gun without suggesting how and where to get instruction and practice thank him for his time and find another gun store. When you do find a shop keeper that is willing to get you the proper training (shooting, particularly handguns, is not instinctive, but can be learned) and practice. Buy your firearms and ammunition from this guy. Welcome to the gang that could shoot straight. Above all remember that guns are dangerous tools and that you are responsible for whatever the bullet does after you have pulled the trigger.

I’ll not bother with particulars but there was a reason the traditional “house” gun for most rural places was and is was a double barrel shotgun.

Electric power - a permenantly connected, by a licensed electrician, automatic propane or diesel fueled generator is very good insurance for a northern New England winter. Pricy but less than freezing all the pipes in your house when the utility power takes a short vacation to Bermuda.
