What is Vermont Like?
I am curious about Vermont for some strange reason. I am age 44 and like to travel. I would like some insider views. Thanks.

Great place to visit. When you visit it is an experience right out of 'Vermont Life' magazine. Living here is slightly different.

Vermont is very clean. It's the only state I have ever lived in where I didn't typically see trash along the side of the road. It's very pretty there. It's also the only state in the nation where you can carry a concealed weapon without a permit to your civil union, lol. It's really pretty in the fall during foilage season. It's really pretty in the spring and summer with all the trees everywhere. It's really pretty in the winter with the snow and hills. It's just plain pretty and clean.

I have to agree with Centaurmyst and mustmove. It is very pretty and clean but living here is a different story. Every once in awhile I'll see some litter here and there but its very rare. In fact, I think I've seen more toilets with "Free" signs in peoples yards than I have seen an empty coke can, LOL. First time I saw that I was like "WTF?". Kind of funny but trashy. Living here is relaxing and safe but a little too boring for me. Thats just me though. This place isn't for everyone.
Anyway, come up here for a visit and have some fun!

It's expensive but beautiful. You can drive from one end to the other in a matter of a few hours, and from side to side in about two hours. Doesn't take long to tour, but sidetracking is the most fun. Quaint shops and small towns are everywhere. I always heard Vermont is about 20 years behind everybody else in a lot of ways. Very homey.

Where I (now) live I like the vibe.
You can 'fly your freak flag' and no one cares.
There is less emphasis on 'owning the best' of everything and shoving it in your neighbor's face.
Here's a line from one of my favorite John Denver song that sums up how I feel about this place:
I’d rather live on the side of a mountain
Than wander through canyons of concrete and steel

Have to agree, it is clean, but that has to do with the fact that we have a very small population. Only occasionally do I find trash on the road, meaning beer bottles and fast food waste, but when I walk my back road I am frustrated that frequently fresh new dumping down slopes and ravines takes place regularly. It's locals who are too lazy, cheap, or in all probability can't really afford to dispose of waste legally. Regular junk, solid waste like appliances and furniture is a nuisance, but when oil and other fluids are dumped near streams and runoffs it poses a real hazard. Just yesterday I checked on a bag left beside the road and it contained waste oil.

I just got back this evening from visiting. I took my dad to a Pastor's conference right outside of Burlington. The fall is so beautiful. I have been the past few falls. The Stowe area is great and driving the Notch is really interesting. This year dad and I took the gondola ride up the mountain, it was clear and you could see the mountain range all around.
It's a great state to just drive and enjoy the beautiful farms and landscape. There are great antiques shops and cottage industries. Ben and Jerry's is always worth one trip.
I drove all around one day with the speaker's wife and we had a great time. We drove up to an area they call the "Kingdom" which has a lot of communes.
I always feel there is so much more I want to see when I leave. I'll have to wait for next year.
