Default Kudos To King Arthur Flour

King Arthur Flour (a larger employer in the Upper Valley) was just named by the WSJ as one of the top 15 small companies to work for. Congrats!

King Arthur Flour named top employer: Rutland Herald Online

Their cookbook rocks

It's a nice place--I know someone who worked there for $10/hour and he said they work VERY VERY hard...(he's not a slacker, either).

Wow, $10.00 an hour, guess I could plan on my retirement villa. Seriously, it's good to to hear about about good employers and employees that are happy, but the the wages provided to live reasonably and quantity of such employers is a very rare exception.

I feel like every time I get offered a job interview or something the agency I work for always prefaces it with "They are a great company..." Then you get the numbers they want to pay and say, "Oh, that's nice." I suppose we are supposed to live on 'crumbs' or 'extras' like at my last job (ooh, free soda!). It was appreciated, don't get me wrong, but so is a living, fair wage.

Quite a few factors make up a "great" company. I know that a few employers really do care about the welfare of their employees and do what they can to foster a good work environment along with fair compensation, but due to business and economic constraints cannot offer wage and benefit plans which they ultimately would like, otherwise they would not remain in business. I personally just don't like the employers that play up their social responsibility angle for the publicity and then screw their employees. I have met quite a few folks here that have had experiences with such employment in various locations throughout Vermont and the public image versus the day to day experiences of the employees on the job is just disgusting.

I first found King Arthur Flour when looking for flour at Shaw's in Walpole and picking up a packing and seeing that it was employee owned. I went ooo, employee owned, because I work at another employee owned company and bought it because it was whole wheat flour. I'll try the recipe on the back of the package soon with Vermont maple syrup.
