Default Work in Bennington, Live in ???

Hello! I'm so excited to find this site. I've been researching the Vermont area ever since my husband got a serious job-lead. The company (in Bennington) flew us out this past weekend to see the area and do a 2nd interview. I fell in love with the scenery ... beats my view of Ohio cornfields any day. But I'm not sure we can afford it there (I've read lots on this board re: taxes, etc).

I've noticed the housing is a lot more expensive. Our $155,000 home in Ohio would be well over $200,000 there and that makes me a bit nervous. We're wondering how people there can afford the housing. It doesn't seem to make much sense to me based on the cost-of-living and salary comparisons that I've seen online.

So my question is, if you work in Bennington, where do most people live? We have 2 children so we'd want a good school district. Some have suggested living in NY but it doesn't seem much different to me. Any ideas? My husband doesn't mind a drive to work each day but would like to stay within a 30 minute commute.

I have family that live in Shaftsbury and work in Bennington. I know a couple folks folks that work in Bennington live across the line in NY state...Hoosick Falls specifically. Hopefully some folks with more specifics about schools can chime in.

I guess I'm tired so when I saw the thread title all I could think of ....a nice house.

The towns in the area are Sunderland, Shaftsbury, Arlington, Pownal, Woodford and Searsburg(you might have to duck once awhile for flying wind turbine blades). You should be able to get an idea as to prices from this site. Just scroll down in the Town window to the Vermont section.

You could also hook-up with a good real estate broker who could help you as well.

I think there have been a few posts about that exact dilema about Vermont in in here

Default Arlington Schools

Arlington schools aren't very good: over crowded, tenured teachers biding their time.
