I have wanted to visit Putney for a while. I have also noticed that the homes are less expensive than in Brattleboro.
I want to come up ASAP. Still thinking of moving up, but I fear the high cost of living and the low salaries. I've been researching the Retreat, but I hear they often have job cuts and they have a lot of financial problems there. And there is another agency in town that is having big labor problems.
Hopefully, as a clinical social worker, I would be able to find work up there if I do move up.
Woops. Just realized I am off topic. So I will add that I am not a redneck. I am a native New Yorker whose ancesters lived in the Lower East Side after coming from eastern Europe. But I grew up in Brooklyn, not Manhattan. I have lived in Manhattan, but deciided I would rather live in Brooklyn, where I wake up to bird noises and not traffic noises.

Rednecks in Upstate New York
I moved to suburban Albany, NY 3 years ago to be closer to where my grandchildren live. Wrong! I grew up in Texas, so maybe I'm more sensitive to it than most people, but the people here are no better than rednecks in the rural South. They have to be making noise all the time. They have amplifiers in their cars blaring out inane "music." They congregate in the evenings and drink beer and make noise together. Somebody is always driving by on a big noisy motorcycle. Nearly everybody drives a truck. I'd move but houses in this area don't appreciate and I am afraid I couldn't sell with all noise going on around here. There are boats in everybody's driveway. Forget mullets--the guy across the street has a rebel flag in his driveway. These people are rednecks!

I lived in Putney from 69-74'. Curtis's BBQ was started during that time. He started in East Putney and has built a pretty good reputation for himeself. Landmark College is in Putney a unique college for folks with visual disbiltities like dyslexia. The Putney School an expensive prep school know for it's olympic xc heritage is just outside of the village. It's about 15 min north of Bratt so it could be a great place to live and commute to Bratt. It is also the home of over 100 working artists/crafts people. A nice collection of rednecks and aging hippies from the 60's.

You have no idea what you are talking about. How about the Hillbilly. Do know who would be considered a hillybilly. I am and darn proud of it. My grandmother was a Hatfield. I got an education and as soon as we sell our property in NM we will be moving back to our home state of Missouri around a lot of hillybillies and rednecks and many other kinds of people. Next time you make a statement please know what you are talking about before spewing your ignorance.

Acrtually there are other agencies in town and nearby. There are also agencies in Keene, New Hampshire. There is the VA hospital in White River Junction. There are agencies in Massachusetts, down Interstate 91. There are a fair number of agencies in the area. The Retreat is the only big psychiatric hospital that I know of in the area. But it is not the only game in town.
I am a beige neck.

To answer the OPs original concern, my wife and I did much research on the best area to retire to, as Long Island had long ago ceased to be our ideal. We traveled all over the northeast, mostly in Vt. We do love the Vermont feel but have heard that you must be at least 2nd generation to truly fit in. We settled in the town of Pompey, just south of Syracuse. This is a very scenic area, with both rural and urban areas within easy access. There is a great deal of pride evident in the way homes are kept here, many more gardens then toilet bowls as it were. Home prices are very reasonable, better if possible than most areas in Vermont. While taxes are quite high, the roads, schools and snow removal (a good thing as we got 140" of the stuff last winter) are world class. The local county and state parks are among the best we've seen. We will always love Vermont, but we feel we made a great choice for us.

Well, Brattleboro is so full of transplants that I'm not worried about not being accepted. But if I leave Brattleboro for that reason, and I decide against Burlington, I will consider a small town in upstate New York. In New York no one will reject me for being an out-of-stater. Of course, being from New York City, well, that's another matter.

I would say that quite a few people here are from downstate,at times I know my Long Gyland accent is apparent and have not received any bad vibes about it. I did forget to add in my first post, my unfortunate brother lives outside Rutland and has the misfortune of having some wanna be moto cross racers as neighbors. Most weekends are ruined for him as these turkeys insist on practicing for hours on end. He is outside the town and there are no noise restrictions on the books. It is all very well and good to espouse freedom to do as one pleases on ones own property, but a persons right to throw a punch ends at my (brothers) nose. A shame he must wear earplugs on his own land.
