My only "experience" with Vermont was The Bob Newhart Show. The opening of the show where you saw the glorious countryside made my heart sing. I was ready to move to Vermont right then. If that is indeed the countryside of Vermont, then it is indeed a glorious place.

For the vast majority yes it is. They have done a good job keeping it that way.

What are the people like there? I mean, are they liberal or conservative? Do they like to be neighborly, or do they keep to themselves? What is the main industry there? Just curious...

The people are reserved, unless they disagree with what you say. Liberal...Liberal....Liberal!

You should clarify for the rest of the forum that there are dense pockets of liberal folks in Vermont but there are vast sparsely populated seas of conservative towns and counties. Saying Vermont is liberal and Virginia (where I now live) is conservative is just looking at the averages which is often less than helpful. For example, I lived in Orwell, VT, which is largely conservative. If you look at the voting tallies, you'll find plenty of conservative voting districts in Vermont.

I agree with Sean. The is a very vocal minority of what I call "super-duper" liberals. Most of which seem to be in the Burlington/Middlebury area.
I think you'll find most people are more in the middle, leaning conservative.

Interesting - I see you're from The State Of Washington...
My best friend lives in Seattle, but grew up in Burlington. I believe he'd tell you people are pretty similar in political orientation, temperment and so on.
People in Washington value community involvement and think for themselves - just like Vermonters. In fact, VT actually has an "open primary" we're not registered to a party and can (and do) vote based on the person, not the party. An illustration of this is the fact that both (independant US Senator)Bernie Sanders and (Republican Governor) Jim Douglas are very popular.
But there are more similarities...

There are some more striking similarities between Washington state and Vermont (a few of "my favorite things"):
You have Starbucks - we have Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.
You have mountains - we have mountains...
You have 4 real seasons - we have (at least) 4 real seasons ;-)
There's an excellent wine industry starting in Washington - we have a little one here too.
People value LOCAL food, local agriculture, farmers markets and the like?
You can't swing a cat around here without hitting a food co-op, a community garden or a farmers market.
You've got Microsoft Millionaires? We've got Ben and Jerry...and a big old IBM plant too...
You have terrific dairy products - VT has some pretty good dairy products too. Heck - Ben and Jerry's was just a little local ice cream shop right down the street for years.
You've got The San Juan Islands? We've got The Champlain Islands...
And of course you know all about the Von Trapp family and The Sound Of Music, right?
Apples, scenery, history, mountains? Yep...
