Most towns are normal towns. Burlington is really like any college town. The rest of Vermont seems like any other place- a mix of all kinds of people. I think this image of Vermont as a state full of nothing but hippies and leftists is sort of an urban legend. Most folks are just regular folks.
There are plenty of middle class people. By definition, there has to be.
The Northeast Kingdom is more conservative overall though.

Basically I'm looking to avoid towns that appeal to mostly pot-smoking socialist hippie Baby Boomers and am looking more for the Old Yankee no-nonsense generational towns.

Good luck with that. The towns are all mixed. Have been since the original invasive species was introduced to VT in the 60's.

Have you been to Vermont before? If so, you should have noticed that what you've described ("pot smoking hippies") is hardly the norm.
Vermont is filled with "non-nonsense" hard working folks.

You have to give it up to a higher power.

I've lived here since September 07 and yet to encounter any pot smoking hippies. Then again, I don't go looking for them, either.
Most people where I live seem to go to work, come home, sit inside by 7 pm and watch tv or hang out with their families. (I live in an apartment complex so I can tell as I walk my dog around).
I'd actually like to meet some hippies myself. They'd appreciate my 60s and 70s folk music more than my husband does.

I agree. You'll find all kinds in VT. Most are (very) hard working and few smoke pot.
Some of my best friends have pickups with gun racks. Others are Latte slurping trust-funders. Others are soccer moms living in the suburbs.
Some of my friends are pickup drivin', deer hunting, latte slurpin', trustafarian sprout- rinsers, who vote libertarian and shop at Sprawlmart, just to keep thier friends guessing...
Ya just never know around here.
Come visit.
You might be pleasantly surprised...

Gypsy, you need to spend some time in Brattleboro. The town is full of the kind of people you want to meet.
One of the strongest impressions I got when I started seriously visiting here was a sense of throwback to the 60's. The environmental consciousness, the clothing and jewelry styles, the liberal politics and the activism are all similar to what went on in the 60's.
The underside of Brattleboro, though, is drug abuse and homelessness, but they are certainly not unique to Brattleboro.

Where I came from, people spoke of VT as an upscale affluent State. I never heard of it being a hippies pot smoking type of place. If I did, I would have moved here sooner!! I am a bit confused about the liberal ways though. If VTers don't want to see this State change, why liberalism?
I also wonder why the majority of voters wanted Douglas, a republican, to win, but Obama, a democrat, as president? How could that be advantageous to VT.
